How did you get into opera?
"Purely by chance! I signed up for singing lessons in high school as a way to get out of class and after a few lessons the Director of Choral music, Claire Caldwell, told me she heard something in my voice that may suit the classical style of singing and that I should give it a go. I said yes, but I got the shock of my life when in my first ever ‘classical’ singing lesson the coach started playing a Schubert lied instead of Elvis."
What has been challenging, unexpected or enjoyable during your singing career?
"I would describe living and being a trainee Young Artist at the Royal Opera House in London, at the height of the pandemic in 2020-2021, challenging, unexpected and at times, enjoyable. It was extremely challenging being away from family at that time, but out of this time also came some unexpectedly enjoyable opportunities. One such opportunity was when I performed the Tongan song, 'Efiafi peau ongo'i vale' Live from the Royal Opera House in London and my family were able to tune in to watch it. It meant a lot to me."
What are your goals for the future?
"I set a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) a few years ago, and that goal was to try and reach a level of success within my singing career that would allow me to set up a foundation that offers free music tuition within New Zealand. I definitely think that falls under the umbrella of BHAG."
Who inspires your practice? Do you have any creative influences or heroes?
"All New Zealand artists that have gone before us. They’ve paved the way for the younger generations and shown us all what’s possible."
